News Writer Sakshi Bajare reports on University of Birmingham Climbing Four Spots in Global Rankings
The University of Birmingham has ascended four places in the latest QS World University Rankings, solidifying its position as a premier research-intensive institution on the global stage. Now ranked 80th, the University’s rise reflects significant progress across various academic and operational metrics.
The updated rankings, released on 4 June, mark a notable advancement for the University, particularly in areas introduced in the QS metrics last year. A standout achievement is its rise in the International Research Network category, where the University now sits at 31st, up 10 places. This metric assesses the extent and impact of the University’s international research collaborations, highlighting its expansive global reach.
Moreover, the University’s academic reputation has improved, climbing five spots to 94th. A remarkable leap was also observed in the Sustainability category, where the University surged 111 places to rank 35th. These improvements underscore the institution’s commitment to fostering sustainable practices and enhancing its global academic standing.
Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor & Principal of the University of Birmingham, expressed pride in the University’s ongoing progress. ‘Our continued rise in the QS World University Rankings recognises the University of Birmingham as one of the world’s leading universities. The rankings highlight the importance and impact of our research, the international experience and outlook of our students, and our global footprint,’ said Professor Tickell.
The QS World University Rankings, a prominent global benchmark, evaluate universities based on their reputation and performance across multiple dimensions. This overall improvement in the rankings comes on the heels of last month’s announcement that seven subject areas at the University were ranked in the Top 50 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The University’s academic excellence is further demonstrated with two of its five faculty areas securing places in the global Top 100: Life Sciences & Medicine ranks 68th, and Arts & Humanities holds the 64th spot. Specific disciplines such as Sport, Dentistry, English, Theology, Anatomy & Physiology, Performing Arts, and Linguistics have achieved Top 50 status.
Particularly noteworthy are Sport, maintaining its top 10 position at 6th, and Linguistics, which has risen 21 places to 28th. Performing Arts improved to 49th, while English advanced to 26th. Overall, the University has 27 subject areas ranked in the Top 100, an increase of five from the previous year.
Professor Deborah Longworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), commented on the rankings’ significance. ‘Our success in this year’s QS World University Rankings further underlines the fact that, in both Birmingham and Dubai, we deliver the highest quality academic experience at the University of Birmingham, stretching and challenging our students with an outstanding research-intensive education. The latest rankings highlight Birmingham as a place for leading scholars, professionals, and students who want to be involved in world-class research and achieve a degree that will enhance professional opportunities around the world.’
As the University of Birmingham continues to enhance its global reputation, these rankings reaffirm its commitment to excellence in research, education, and sustainability, ensuring that it remains a top choice for scholars and students worldwide.
