From the infectious band The New Twentys comes ‘Rush,’ a groovy track which fuses together different genres into something new and original. The band was born by brothers, Harry and Jimmy Morris, alongside Chris Bourne, who came together to create music that integrates moments of pop, punk, new wave and funk. As a new band who just started releasing music in 2020, they take their band name from the new age of twenties that had just begun, and have already released numerous singles and two exciting EPs.

Featuring montage-scene worthy instrumentation, ‘Rush’ begins with its fun, catchy chorus, teasing this melody and funky bassline to the listeners. The breathy falsetto in the chorus contrasts with the prominent deep bass and later lower verse melodies to create something constantly moving forward, urgent and energetic. The lyrics point to the insistence that ‘it’s all about the rush of blood/ to your head,’ exploring a hot-headed youthful experience. The conversational tone of the lyrics speaks to the frustration of a young generation, urging them to move onwards and take risks.

It never feels predictable and takes the listener on an unexpected journey

Although the band use a repeating refrain in the chorus, the track is constantly shifting, adding instrumental layers, including overdrive distorted guitar, spoken shouts and synths. These keep the listener engaged, without overwhelming the song.

With its amalgamation of so many different influences, from 80s funk to a disillusioned punk-rock attitude towards society, ‘Rush’ retains an individuality that makes it stand out. For me, it is the moments of off-beat drums, vocals and bass-line movements that make this song so interesting, as it never feels predictable and takes the listener on an unexpected journey.

Just like the artwork for the track, the song feels futuristic, bright and distinctive. As The New Twentys utilise instrumental layers to create a climactic build-up to the final chorus, we are left wanting more of this ‘Rush’ that we have been given.
