Music Critic Eve Hutchinson reviews Mabel’s latest single ‘Stupid Dumb’
On 11th October 2024, Mabel released her latest single ‘Stupid Dumb’ featuring American singer and record producer Ty Dolla $ign.‘Stupid Dumb’ is the British singer’s fourth single from her upcoming studio album.
2024 has been a busy year for Mabel musically. This year, she has released stand-alone singles ‘Vitamins’ and ‘Zero’ with Black Sherif and album singles ‘Look At My Body Pt II’ featuring Shygirl and ‘Female Intuition’.
Mabel, best known for pop hits such as ‘Don’t Call Me Up’ and ‘Mad Love’, has shifted to a more R&B-influenced sound in ‘Stupid Dumb’. Lyrically, ‘Stupid Dumb’ is a declaration of a strong, mutual romantic attraction between two partners, resulting in euphoric highs and a loss of control.
The song begins with the catchy, hook-filled chorus, ‘I’ve been going all stupid for ya’, and a strong percussion beat which immediately draws in the listener with its pulsing production. Mabel and Ty Dolla $ign’s vocal chemistry is tangible. The blending of their voices creates an exciting, dynamic combination which makes the longing and magnetism portrayed in the lyrics even more palpable. One of my favourite lyrics in the song is ‘Now, I found me a new kiss / paint me like music’. The lyrics capture the thrilling feeling of finding love and taking the first steps in a fresh relationship. Ty Dolla $ign’s rap section in the second verse is a free-flowing, open proclamation of sexual compatibility, highlighting the work needed in a relationship for one to become ‘Stupid Dumb’ with love.
‘Stupid Dumb’ is a confident, upbeat track which serves as an impressive, snappy follow-up to Mabel’s portfolio of 2024 singles. Ty Dolla $ign’s feature adds to the R&B feel of the record, creating sensual harmonies and a well-grounded storyline. Mabel’s momentum built from her succession of singles this year continues with ‘Stupid Dumb’, raising anticipation for the launch of her third album. I am very excited to listen to Mabel’s upcoming album and follow her musical journey into its third era. Mabel has a promising future within the British music industry, and I look forward to seeing the direction her album takes.
