Music Critic Hannah Gadd review Halsey’s latest single ‘Die 4 Me’, praising her passionate and powerful lyrics.
Halsey’s ‘Die 4 Me’ has been highly anticipated amongst her fan base for years and it’s safe to say they will be far from disappointed. What was originally a feature on Post Malone’s 2019 track ‘Die For Me’, the alternate version of the song sees the singer reflect upon a toxic, broken relationship and shows how she has evolved as an artist over recent years.
‘Die 4 Me’ still holds some of the R&B/Hip-Hop elements present in the original track, but with more of an alt-pop focus which best compliments Halsey’s strong suits. Reminiscent of her sophomore album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, the sleek, rhythmic pop sound is captivating. The distinct vocalist is powerful and passionate in her lyrics, which I wish were delivered with the raw intensity we hear in her verse on the feature. Her brutally authentic words sit on top of a soundscape filled with distorted guitars, crispy electronic drums and dancing hi-hats. There is no real build-up or climax in the track. Instead, the instrumentation prevents Halsey’s vocals from being swallowed up by the music.
This long-awaited single seems to be an emotionally-charged radio hit with an edge which still keeps fans of her latest work, which leans into a more rock-influenced sound, engaged. Simple but fierce, ‘Die 4 Me’ is an interesting release from Halsey and definitely one her fans will enjoy after years of waiting for this solo extended version.
