After the release of her first EP Don’t Smile at Me in August 2017, Billie Eilish has spent the last year and a half keeping fans in the dark about her debut album. However, she has recently revealed the upcoming release’s first single, ‘bury a friend’, accompanied with a fittingly creepy music video and a date for her long-awaited album. Referenced in the lyrics of ‘bury a friend’, the album will be called WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and will be released on 29 March.

Billie’s soft vocals are offset with a minimalistic, pulsing beat and growling interjections from rapper Crooks

Whilst a far cry from the ethereal, melancholy tunes of ‘lovely’ and ‘when the party’s over,’ Billie’s soft vocals are offset with a minimalistic, pulsing beat and growling interjections from rapper Crooks. Her elder brother Finneas O’Connell’s high production value is clear, ensuring every part of the song cleanly meshes together. The underlying beat is reminiscent of Kanye West’s ‘Black Skinhead’, adding a sense of darkness to the track and emphasising the eerie lyrics, which are ‘literally from the perspective of the monster under [Billie’s] bed.’ If just one song from Billie’s debut album can carry itself with such power, I am confident that the rest of the album will be incredible, and I’m greatly looking forward to it.
