Food&Drink Writer Phoebe Holdsworth reviews Morrison’s newest plant-based pastry, offering her opinion on this vegan treat
Crumbly, salty and soft, with notes of sage and onion – the Morrison’s vegan footlong sausage roll is an absolute success. Despite being large enough for two meals, this delicious pastry is yours for only £1. The texture is soft and creamy, which contrasts well with the flaky pastry. In terms of taste, it isn’t particularly meaty. It has a very mild sage flavour and could probably be more accurately described as a ‘stuffing wellington.’
In fact, with a little imagination, this sausage roll could be so much more than just a snack. I could easily visualise it as a meat alternative in a Sunday roast or a Christmas dinner. It would be absolutely delicious with a hearty portion of roast potatoes, some gravy, and even some cranberry jelly, and considering its size, would definitely feed multiple mouths.
Obviously, the price point begs a comparison to the Greggs 90p vegan sausage roll. The Greggs version, adorned with its distinctive lattice, is undoubtedly more stylish. Neither are particularly meaty, but both have that specific processed taste that harks back to the greasy cheapness of fast food meat. But with Morrisons, you (literally) get so much more.
So keep the Greggs as something simple, hastily grabbed at a stressful lunchtime when that craving for fatty fast food is too strong. Consider the immense Morrisons sausage roll as something special. Something with possibilities beyond that of the lunchtime rush. Give it a go. You won’t regret it.
