Music Critic Samantha Andrews urges everyone to listen to The 1975’s new single, If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know), saying it could be the band’s best track to date
Ahead of the release of their new album Notes On A Conditional Form, The 1975 have released ‘If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)’, and in doing so have possibly released their best song yet. They performed this song on their most recent tour and it swiftly became a fan favourite, circling social media with various live recordings from fans. Live, it was an anthemic testament to the fun and energetic sound of the 1975, and the studio single lives up to that perfectly.
If you were a fan of The 1975’s singles ‘Love Me,’ ‘The Sound’ and ‘It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)’ then ‘If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)’ will quickly become your new favourite song. It begins with 80’s-esque echoing guitar riffs and underlying synths that persist throughout the song and call to The 1975’s signature sound. The balancing of a traditional live band and digitised samples is executed brilliantly throughout the song. It combines all of the best elements of The 1975’s sound, from alternative guitars to modern synth pop and delivers it in a way that is exciting and elevated from what we’ve heard from them before.
At the forefront of ‘If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)’ is its catchiness. As the drumbeat kicks in and propels the energy of the song into the chorus, the saxophone melodies enter and elevate the song to a whole other level. The lyrics ‘Maybe I would like you better if you took off your clothes’ become incredibly catchy and are impossible not to chant along to. It’s this catchiness mixed with the upbeat, feel good energy of the music that makes this song so perfect. It has pretty much been stuck in my head since I heard it live in February.
‘If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)’ is possibly the best song of The 1975’s so far. It is infectiously catchy, upbeat and fun, all whilst maintaining their signature sound; it is a song that everyone needs to hear, and It’s The 1975 at their best.
