Life&Style writer Anna-Sophie Christensen talks us through how to stay warm AND fashionable this autumn
Now that the colours of the trees are changing and the pumpkin spice latte has once again taken over, it’s time to dig out that warm jumper you’ve been hiding in the back of your closet for the last couple of months. But even though the temperature is cooling down to below a level that is far from comfortable and the duration of daylight is suddenly becoming awfully short, you don’t have to pack away you favourite summer top just yet.
In spite of the fact that autumn usually equals a big comfortable sweater and a scarf, you can actually expand the lifetime of your summer clothes all the way into the cold months. With these few tips below and some creativity you can look fashionable and still avoid the cold in you favourite clothes!
If you got obsessed over summer with long feathery dresses like the rest of the world, you are in luck! Long dresses (and dresses in general) are the perfect item when you want to layer up for autumn. All you have to do is add a pair of jeans underneath your dress, and you have successfully accomplished one of the most popular layer trends.
If the temperature outside is reminding you of the North Pole, add a knitted sweater either underneath or over your dress and just like that, you have given your favourite summer dress the ability to overcome all kinds of British weather. And if the sun does decide to make an appearance, just add a t-shirt underneath your dress instead, and you are good to go. If you want to add some definition to your waist, just add a belt and you have whole different outfit.
If you aren’t particularly found of dresses don’t get stressed out! Because here comes another item, that is just as perfect if not even more perfect for autumn. The turtleneck. If you had to choose one item that is a must for layering up for autumn, this one should be it. Not only is the turtleneck perfect for autumn since it keeps your neck nice and warm but it also makes your outfit far more coordinated. Add a turtleneck beneath one of your favourite sweaters, in any colour or print, and you will suddenly have a whole different outfit. The same goes with your favourite t-shirt or shirt that you thought was only suitable for summer. And a little tip; a printed shirt is often best with a plain turtleneck.
Now that we are talking about shirts, why not stay in that lane for a while? Because not only does the shirt-over-turtleneck make a great outfit, but a button shirt underneath a sweater is probably one of the most classic layer outfits of all time, and should definitely not be forgotten! If you are going for a more relaxed look just add a longer shirt or a cropped hoodie instead of a sweater.
If you are one of those people who get cold just thinking of autumn, then maybe this next tip is useful for you. Instead of going directly from your summer jacket to your big winter jacket just layer a larger jacket over a smaller one. This look works especially great with a warm blazer or cowboy jacket as the underneath layer. Another tip is to use a long coat for the outer layer, so you add some length definition to the look for a more sophisticated vibe.
These are some ideas and tips you can add to your daily style. When it comes to layering, creativity is key. It’s about having fun. So make it into a fun competition with yourself to see how you can put together different items from your wardrobe and watch them come alive again!
