News Editor Tamara Greatrix reports on Gobby Flicks Comedy, the new comedy night coming to Birmingham, championing female voices
Bouncing between two of Birmingham’s coolest venues, The Mockingbird Cinema in Digbeth and Midlands Arts Centre in Canon Hill Park, Gobby Flicks Comedy is Birmingham’s newest up and coming comedy night. And it’s doing way more than just getting laughs.
“Your new favourite comedy night has just launched in Birmingham
Your new favourite comedy night has just launched in Birmingham. Launched by Gobby Girl Productions, this exciting new event is dedicated to spotlighting underrepresented voices in comedy, with a strong focus on gender equality in the industry.
Each month, the event features a lineup of rising stars and established comics, culminating in a screening of a comedy short film. With a dedicated space for networking, this night is perfect for students wanting to break into the media scene. The films, either created by or featuring the performers on the night, or submitted by talented Midlands filmmakers, reflect the night’s core mission: to support and celebrate diverse creatives.
“The goal of the night is to support underrepresented voices in the comedy industry, with a particular emphasis on female writers
Gobby Girl Productions, founded by producer and champion of female voices Gina Lyons, was born from a passion for rebalancing scales in an industry where the statistics concerning gender equality still speak volumes. In 2018, the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) found that only 18% of sitcoms were written by women. Even more recently, the 2022 Diamond report found that female directors made up just 33% of the field, though comedy numbers are believed to be even lower, possibly under 25%. In an exclusive interview with Gina, she told Redbrick that the goal of the night is to support underrepresented voices in the comedy industry, with a particular emphasis on female writers. Her mission, as highlighted on her website, is to ‘support creatives and redress the balance.’
In order to take action against the statistics, money raised from the night will go directly into the Gobby Girl Film Fund, aimed at helping female writers and directors produce their own comedy shorts. These short films will then feature in future events, cultivating a cycle of support and visibility.
Gobby Flicks Comedy returns to the Midlands Arts Centre on Thursday 24th April 2025. The night is set to be a blast, with an exciting lineup featuring Kate Barron, Spencer Jones and a mystery guest to be announced soon!
Students can grab tickets for just £6 using the code ‘GOBBYSTUDENT.’
