A student who attended the ELSA ball and other events on campus last weekend has reportedly been tested positive for COVID-19 after leaving Birmingham to go home.

The student is not a University of Birmingham (UoB) student.

ELSA’s UoB branch held their Gala on March 7th at the Cube.

Everyone has just been advised to self-isolate as a precaution

Speaking to Redbrick, Amanda Muntz, a committee member for the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA), outlined that everyone is currently okay and that ‘the people who are higher risk than others, myself included as I was part of the organising committee meaning I was in contact with everyone, are being tested, but for the most part, everyone has just been advised to self-isolate as a precaution.

‘We just want to make sure it’s known that this is a very low risk situation. It’s all precautionary at this time.

‘We’ve made a statement regarding this on our Facebook page and as of right now no one in Birmingham is linked to this event is confirmed for COVID-19.’

Muntz further outlined that the situation is being handled by ELSA and they are currently in contact with UoB regarding the next steps to take.

A spokesperson for UoB told Redbrick: ‘Public Health England (PHE) has advised that this case does not involve a University of Birmingham student. Therefore at this time there are still no confirmed cases at the University. Our understanding is that anyone who has been in contact with someone infected by COVID-19 will be contacted by Public Health England and advised to self-isolate. We would request our staff and students to follow this advice responsibly and refer to our FAQs and to PHE guidance.

The University stated that they would communicate to staff and students were there to be a confirmed case at the University and that they would follow the advice of Public Health England.

The World Health Organisation confirmed that the coronavirus outbreak is a ‘pandemic.’

Any student who believes they may have COVID-19 should not go to their GP surgery but should instead stay at home and avoid close contact with people. If you believe you have contracted the virus, use the NHS 111 online coronavirus service, which can be found here.
