Guild TV Station Manager Rosie Jones brings you up to date on one of the other excellent media societies that UoB has to offer
In the depths of the Guild Basement, under the flickering fluorescents and hidden by the breezeblock walls, that wouldn’t be out of place in a psychiatric ward, there lies a wonderful place. A film and television studio, built from the cumulative blood, sweat and cable rashes of 30 consecutive committees and maintained like a well-soldered cable bodge. The Guild TV Studio has seen it all – from reels of film, to VCR, to DVDs and now, finally, the dark ages of streaming services. Starting out as a society right on the cusp of the change from black-and-white to colour TV, we now have the capability to stream in 4 or even 6k; a fact that our predecessors could not have ever imagined. All things said, our society has intricate lore and an even more intricate system of industry connections.
If you hadn’t already guessed from the gibberish written above, Guild TV is the film, television and broadcasting society. We dip our toes into pretty much everything that needs a camera – from short films, to YouTube and TikTok friendly content, from traditional talkshow-style livestreams to multi-camera, high quality sports coverage. Our biggest goal is to provide people with the training and space to learn what they would like to learn about film. We are always on the lookout for new crew members and new projects – our membership is only £8, and considering the quality of equipment you’ll be getting for that, we reckon it’s a steal. There are no other payments save for this membership, by the way.
We have several opportunities that you can get involved with, should you wish to gain more experience in the appropriate areas. Firstly, we have our live coverage of the xpLosION American Football match, which is great for those who would like to learn more about the kind of broadcasting you’d see on TV (what we do is very close to it, for a lot less of a budget), as well as gaining experience in the industry that you can put towards a high-quality, highly sought after position working in television.
Secondly, if you would like to make your own project, we can help you out with casting, finding crew, planning and lending you our kit – which includes our BlackMagic Cinema 6k, an £8000 camera that is surprisingly easy to use and provides you with high-quality, cinematic shots. We also run at least one workshop a week and regular socials.
