European Athletics have announced that Birmingham will play host to their 2026 Championships, following the city’s successful stint hosting the Commonwealth Games this summer.

During the Commonwealth Games, the athletics programme was based in Perry Park’s Alexander Stadium, which will also be the home of the European Athletics Championships. The University of Birmingham’s Vale also played host to athletes from around the world this summer, but  it is unclear if the University’s facilities will similarly be used in 2026.

West Midlands mayor, Andy Street, tweeted ‘We are building on the success of the legacy of the Commonwealth Games in the summer, landing another world class sporting event.

‘Well done to those who made this happen, the sky is the limit for this region,’

While the UK has hosted many of the World’s most prestigious sporting events, such as the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, and the World Athletics Championships, this is the first time the UK will host the European Athletics Championships.

Councillor Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council said, ‘We are honoured and privileged to be asked to be the first-ever UK hosts of the prestigious European Athletics Championships in 2026.

‘Over many years we have demonstrated we are a city that can proudly host major events of this type and scale – and the people of Birmingham and indeed the entire nation have proven time and time again their huge appetite for sport, especially athletics.

‘The Alexander Stadium is beyond all doubt the premier athletics facility in the country and we cannot wait to welcome the elite of European athletics for this event, which will also bring a range of benefits for local communities and our economy beyond the programme of track and field activities.’
