In my first two years at Birmingham, I often thought that Selly Oak was lacking quality coffee shops, so when I moved back after my year abroad, I was pleasantly surprised by the bold blue and pink exterior of Hey Brew Espresso on our very own Bristol Road.

After only opening in early August, this quirky cafe sits near the corner of Dawlish Road and is a popular hit with students, locals, plant-lovers, and dog-owners alike (the free Puppuccinos speak for themselves). It boasts a menu of specialty coffee from roasters such as Girls who Grind Coffee, Assembly Roast, and Quarter House Coffee Roasters, and a variety of sweet treats. Also, a notably varied selection of delicious and nutritious bagels such as:

  • The Italian Job: prosciutto, salami, ham, and leaves in an olive oil dressing
  • The New Yorker: Smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, rocket, tomatoes, and dill
  • Simply the Pesto: mozzarella, pesto, tomato, and rocket

Not to mention, plenty of vegan and veggie options such as falafel bagel specials and free alternative milk options, this cosy spot knows exactly how to appeal to its Selly Oak customers.

A recent visit of mine involved a caramel iced latte and a CBA (chicken, bacon, avocado, tomatoes, and leaves on a toasted sesame seed bagel), the latter of which I enjoyed for its tasty combination of crunchy and soft textures, salty flavours balanced with creamy and nutty fresh avocado.

Bagels range from £4.10 to £6.50 and are served with a side of tortilla chips if you fancy, whilst coffee prices include £2.40 for an espresso and £3.30 for a latte. It seems to me like Hey Brew is putting their own innovative twist on classics such as the BLT and are spicing up normal sweet treats with indulgent creations such as the ‘Freddo frog cookie pie’ (stocked by ‘Blissful Bakes’). It’s lovely to see the quality of the food and drink on offer here and that Hey Brew values locally sourced, fresh produce from independent partners; feeding us with fine foods and our consciences alike with such a sustainable ethos.

Not only is the interior decorated with houseplants from wall to wall, but the space also stretches out backwards to offer plenty of seating, perfect for catching up with friends or study sessions over a flat white and gooey Jammy-Dodger Blondie – a personal favourite! As well as a stylish design inside, this little coffee shop exudes charm with friendly and hospitable staff. To the backdrop of a groovy playlist, you can count on a smile and warm reception from the baristas here.

The positive, relaxed atmosphere of this little Birmingham gem is infectious, and a visit leaves you feeling refreshed, energised, and ready to go about the rest of your day with a spring in your step. If you haven’t already, pop in, and discover the delights of Hey Brew.
