Culture Editor Halima Ahad praises season three of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, shining a light on the catchiness of the musical numbers and the series’ overall tribute to the film franchise
In the highly anticipated new season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the gang head to Camp Shallow Lake to spend their summertime singing songs and making new friends after the success of their past musical, Beauty and the Beast.
The soundtrack of the show mimics two famous Disney Channel summer movies, High School Musical 2 and Camp Rock. In the first few episodes, we see it, as well as some original songs, throughout paired with fun and catchy choreography. The rendition of ‘What Time Is It’ at the beginning of the first episode sets the tone for the next two episodes perfectly, there is a carefree and light-hearted tone for what lies ahead for the Wildcats this summer. However, there is also drama alongside the success of their prior musical with a major break up, mimicking the real-life Disney Channel star drama.

The acting performances of the cast feel very natural, when it comes to the scenes of the actor addressing the camera, there is a sense of trust between them and the audience. The new season of the show also brings three new characters to light, all creating new and interesting dynamics within the show. This includes Maddox (Saylor Bell Curda) and Jet (Adrian Lyles) who provide a refreshing feel and bring an energy that is needed at the beginning of the show. The music also brings a sense of nostalgia, with songs such as ‘What Time Is It’, inevitably evoking childhood memories of the High School Musical movies. However, there is also a modern feel with the new songs that are brought forward, such as ‘Finally Free’ sung by Joshua Bassett and ‘Balance’, sung by Gina (Sofia Wylie), showcasing her ongoing confidence across the past two series.

Towards the beginning of the three episodes, each of the characters from the past season bring light to their new dynamics, while also setting the tone for what the rest of the episodes could bring. The original songs set the tone for the rest of the show, and inevitably ignite the audience’s interest. It is highly anticipated that it will be renewed for another season, with so much potential, it forces the viewer to consider where it will go next.
