Halloween has passed but the bone-chilling encounters are not over; the brisk Brummie winds are advancing upon us with worrisome velocity and I think I speak for all of us when I say that I am not ready. Besides this, the level of effort going into my once socially acceptable outfits has been aggressively deteriorating. In an attempt to spice up and warm up this season here is my list of five ways to wear a scarf.

Big Scarves

A flat out essential, possession of this type of scarf enables you to stay warm even if your coat is not as thick or weather appropriate as you thought it would be. They are your blanket from home, your bed on the move. Guaranteed to stop you feeling in denial of the weather and start embracing the cosy autumn season.

Try: wrapping up your neck in a voluminous bundle, or flinging one end carelessly over your shoulder.

Thin Scarves

These are a subtler addition to your outfit than their chunkier cousins mentioned above and can add a pop of colour or some pattern to an otherwise lacklustre outfit.

Try: draping it untied round your neck and letting it poke out under a long coat.

Headscarves

Headscarves are the easiest method to make yourself look like you tried

Effortlessly cool and capable of adding a touch of femininity to any look, headscarves are the easiest method to make yourself look like you tried. With so many patterns and colours, headscarves will easily mingle with any style and give you those chic farmer girl vibes that you didn’t know you needed.

Try: tying them like a little kerchief round your head or as an accessory for the simple pony-tail with chunky gold hoops.

Neck Scarves

This is one for the upper echelons of fashion society, or those with pretensions to get there. Tie a little scarf round your neck and you will immediately rocket up to become a style icon on par with the average Parisian.

Try: a quirky print and tying it in a little knot with layered necklaces or wrapped around multiple times for a more formal look.

Scarf tops

Right, so this one is not exactly an autumn look but I couldn’t resist including it. Given that we’re all staying at home (thank you Covid-19) with the central heating blasting why not try a large silky scarf as a sleeveless crop top by creatively tying it around your torso?

Try: a variety of looks from casual (patterned scarf) to fancy (monochrome silk scarf)
